There is extensive research supporting the impact of high quality one-to-one and small group tutoring as a catch-up strategy. My approach involves weekly tuition with pupils and close liaison with staff in order to support the child’s learning within the classroom. The benefits of offering this combined service are profound; not only is the pupil able to benefit from bespoke teaching methods linked to their individual learning style in a 1:1 or small group lesson, but importantly there is also an emphasis placed upon their transference of skills back in the classroom. This joined-up approach leads to a deeper understanding and application of knowledge.
In line with the SEND Code of Practice, the assess-plan-do-review cycle will be adhered to. Prior to any tutoring, the pupil’s learning needs will be assessed and meetings will be held with relevant school staff to develop a detailed profile of the pupil’s strengths and areas for development. This will ensure that support is well-targeted and will provide a baseline from which to monitor progress. At the end of the intervention period, the pupil will be re-assessed and a comprehensive report will be written for school detailing their levels of engagement, progress and ideas for next steps. Staff will be offered the opportunity of a meeting to discuss this and share their experiences in class. By working in partnership, a cohesive learning experience is achieved for the pupil, resulting in more successful outcomes.
Each pupil will receive an hour of 1:1 or small group tutoring each week. This will take place within a quiet area in school. Specialist tutoring will take the form of structured interventions, comprising evidence-based approaches for successful learning outcomes. Research conducted by the Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF) demonstrates that an evidence-informed approach gives us the best chance of maximising impact.
Learn to Bloom have devised a comprehensive programme specifically designed to support the mental health of pupils with SEND. This intervention, delivered by a specialist tutor, entails 12 sessions of 1:1 work with an identified pupil and can be organised into twice-weekly or weekly sessions to suit. Please contact us for further details on the specific areas covered by this programme and how it can be adapted to meet your individual requirements.
